Fall 2002 Newsletter
Greetings:
The summer has come to an end, the days are
starting to get shorter, and my favorite season is arriving. I enjoy the colors of fall and the cooler
weather. The geese are in their huge V
patterns as they fly south, honking and chatting with each other. I know I will
miss watching the humming birds who peek into the window of my office after a
meal at the feeder. There is
construction going on all around me and the deer and smaller critters are being
uprooted. I have told them that my
property is a safe haven for them.
When you receive this newsletter I will
probably be just arriving home from the American Holistic Veterinary Medical
Association Annual Conference in Eugene, Oregon. I was scheduled to speak at the conference last year in
September, but it was cancelled due to the terrorist attacks. I am looking forward to being there and
learning. I am delighted to be able to
share about animal communications with a group of people who are interested in
the natural approach to healing the animals.
Big News!
I am currently working with Stacey Small of Equilite, Inc. to develop a
new line of remedies called Herbs ‘n Essences, made up of flower essences,
herbs, and homeopathics. The idea came
up because I had quite a few calls from people with dogs with severe separation
anxieties. Stacey and I worked together
and have a remedy that I believe will be a great help. We are at the testing
stage at this time. More and more ideas
came to us as we worked, and the original idea has evolved into a line of
products. We will have products to give
your animals when they are going to stay at the vets or the kennel, kitties
that run and hide from people when there is no danger, and a remedy for both
the person and animal to take when there is a terminal illness. We are working on a remedy for a condolence
kit that was designed by Susan Ajamian that can be a gift to someone who has
just lost a companion.
There are more situations we have on the
list, but we would appreciate input from you.
I will let you know in the newsletters what we are doing as we travel on
our path of emotional healing.
I used to love to read. I have been so busy lately that reading has
been put aside in my life. I received a
book recently that I read and want to share with you. ANIMAL VOICES by Dawn
Baumann Brunke is excellent. I will
discuss it later in the newsletter, and I want to review books in future
issues. Look for THE DAISY SUTRA by Helen Weaver and BLESSING THE BRIDGE by Rita Reynolds and several others.
Speaking of books -- A SECOND CHANCE TO SAY GOODBYE: Building A Bridge to the Other Side
by Marianne Michaels, with Anita Curtis (yep, me), is being printed at this
time. I finally found out what “by” and “with” means on a book cover. Marianne told me what she wanted in the book
and I wrote it.
The book is $13.95 plus $2 shipping and
handling and 84 cents for those of who reside in Pennsylvania. You can order
from my website and deduct $2 a book for any orders before October 31, 2002. The books should be ready to ship
shortly.

TELEPATHIC
COMMUNICATION IN THE WEB OF LIFE
BY DAWN
BAUMANN BRUNKE
Animal Voices by Dawn Baumann Brunke was written from information gathered
from interviews with animal communicators and also from the animals
themselves. Dawn tells of her journey
into the world of animal communications and the journeys of others who have
listened to the animals and have been in awe of their messages. There is a common thread of respect from the
communicators to the animals for the intelligence, humor, spirituality, and
good old down-to-earth charm as they teach us what we need to know.
Each chapter begins with the words of wisdom
from one of our animal friends, and we can all learn from them.
This is a book that is well worth reading.

Spay/Neuter Stamp
On September 20,
2002, the United Stated Postal Service will issue two commemorative postage
stamps declaring the lifesaving message: Spay/Neuter. This is the first
opportunity to present the critical message to segments of the American public
who may be unaware of the crisis of companion animal overpopulation. By issuing
spay/neuter stamps, the USPS is doing its part to promote humane and
responsible pet care and to provide a forum for effective collaboration among
those who share those goals. Sources of spay/neuter services and information
throughout Pets911 will be printed on every set of stamps sold.

Pets provide us with
unconditional love and companionship, and even lower our blood pressure. But
sometimes they can make our blood boil when they act like, well, animals.
Sadly, for too many animals exhibiting behaviors their caregivers can't deal
with, their fate is tragic: They are given up, or given up on.
Behavior problems top
the list of reasons for pet relinquishment. Thousands of other pets are given
up because of lifestyle changes, such as the birth of a child, or human health
issues, such as family members with allergies or HIV/AIDS. Still others are
given up because their caregivers couldn't find pet friendly rental housing, or
because their owners simply had unrealistic expectations about what it meant to
care for a pet.
For all these
reasons, The Humane Society of the United States has launched the Pets for Life
campaign. Our goal: to curtail the numbers of animals relinquished to shelters-
or otherwise given up on- because of breaks in the
human-animal bond. To
achieve this goal, we're developing a variety of programs to empowerr pet
care givers to solve the problems that threaten their relationships with pets.
Visit this website to help solve your pet problems.

EAR MITES...
Ear
mites are a common cause of many ear problems in cats and dogs. Ear mites are
found in pets of all ages, but kittens tend to be infected more commonly. Otodectes cynotis is a type of mite that
lives on the surface of the skin, rather than tunneling into it. The mite is
able to reproduce in the ears and live approximately two months. They cause an
intense hypersensitive reaction that leads to severe itching in many animals.
Some animals cause a significant amount of trauma to their ears by constant
scratching. Ear mites are very contagious. In addition, they can migrate to
other parts of the body and cause itching. Often, but not always, a dark,
granular substance will be present in the ear canal of an animal with ear
mites, and signs of irritation and itchiness will be evident. Clinical signs of
ear mites develop as the mites feed in the ear canal. The feeding causes
irritation and the canals will fill with cerumen, mite debris, and blood. The
ear canals typically have a dark, coffee ground-like substance in them. Ear
mites are passed from one animal to another through close contact, Diagnosis
can be achieved through visual identification of the mites under a microscope
from debris or skin scrapings. Treatment starts with a very thorough cleaning
of the ears to get all the debris and wax out of the canals, If the ears are
not properly cleaned, mites can survive the treatment because the wax and
debris protects them. There are several medications available for the treatment
of ear mites, which are applied directly into the ears. Effective prevention
requires proper medical treatment of all animals that have mites and those in
contact with those carrying mites.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE…….Some Poetry:
LIFE LESSONS FROM HORSES
Horses are great teachers,
from them I've learned a lot,
Why, way back in the
beginning, I could not even sit a trot.
A lead horse somehow has a
way, of being first in line,
He taught: be bold,
assertive, adventure you will find.
They all taught dedication,
attentiveness and care,
A search for wisdom and know
how, and to seek them everywhere.
They've taught me to be
humble, not to think you know it all,
For just about that time for
sure, they'll show you how to fall.
Another thing which I may
need, is the cause for urgent prayer,
Horse problems can crop up so
quick, you may not even be aware.
A well trained horse can show
you how, to lighten up your cue,
To ride with much more gentle
skill, find delight in what your horse can do.
They've taught me, "Ask,
do not demand", a please or question first,
Gets much more cooperation -
works so great, I think I'm going to burst.
They've taught me to teach
others, this knowledge is to share,
New horse people need a
mentor, be the one to show you care.
A horse can show you
friendship, keep a secret that you've shared,
Happy to be with you, at home or anywhere.
And so at that great roundup,
where we all meet in the sky,
Our horsey friends will be
there too, - no need to wonder why.
